WEEKLY WORK IN 305

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK NINE BLOG ENTRY

Ponder a bit on paper, answering one of the following questions:

When you are 90 years old, what will matter most to you?

Imagine I am giving you one billion dollars(you are welcome). Now, the only condition is that you must still find a job to do. What job would you chose, knowing that money is of no concern?

Ask yourself, when did I last push the boundaries of my comfort zone?

To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken?

What is your number one goal for the next six months?

What did JFK mean by this quote? "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them."

  1. The last time I pushed the boundaries of my comfort zone was this morning on the treadmill. I have not run in a while and I pushed myself, despite being nauseated, to finish strong. This may not seem like a large accomplishment but pushing ourselves daily helps. A large shift in my comfort zone occurred in 2009 when I chose to overcome my fear of heights via skydiving. I have not reduced the fear one hundred percent but I have made great progress because of that event. Pushing ourselves to another level of un-comfort helps put more perspective in our lives. Knowing that I can accomplish one goal can help me be more confident in taking on the next one. My next goal is to get over the fear of starting a part time business and jump in head first. We often have the skills necessary to do something great yet do not use them because of this innate sense of false evidence appearing real. I like assignments like this because it helps me reflect upon what I have done and think about the next mountain I have yet to conquer.

    1. Nice! I'm about to start my workout for the day and I appreciated and related to your comment about the treadmill. Every time you go a little longer or harder or farther is a huge success in pushing your comfort boundaries. Also, I want to skydive someday too! Awesome.

    2. Oh, I have been there. It is always so hard to stay on the treadmill, especially since it is one of the least enjoyable things ever. lol. It is awesome that you went skydiving! I am so jealous when I see pictures and whatnot of someone doing it. I wish I was brave enough to do that, but I would probably look out of the plane and cry like a little baby.

    3. skydiving! lucky you! I've always want to do that, but no luck yet. I'm not afraid of heights but it will definitely be on my bucket list.

    4. Your first sentence made me laugh…haha!! I hate running worth a passion. I wish I could like it and enjoy it, but I just have never been able to . I think it is cool that you went skydiving. I am not scared of heights, but I just don't think that skydiving is ideal for me. I would really like to go bungee jumping though. I think that it is important to test yourself because sometimes you have to push yourself to the absolute limit so that you can find out how truly strong that you are.

    5. I honestly hate running, but I did it anyways. I started doing the treadmill back in January this year, and boy it was hard for me. But I kept going. I started with a slow pace, and now I either run or jog 3-4 times a week. I feel more active and healthier than the previous years. And I definitely saw improvements. I gained muscle weight and toned up. Keep going and don't stop :)

    6. Way to face your fear of heights! I wish I could be that brave. My stomach turns just thinking about being on a plane let alone jumping out of one. Maybe one day.

    7. I have heard of a skydiving place in Taft but have never had the courage to go. Its on my buket list for sure.

  3. When I’m 90, I believe the most important thing to me would be the love of my family members. I also want to be a healthy and active elderly woman. I want to do things for myself at that age. I want to have people that are going to love me and care for me. My grandparents were very much loved by all their children. Unfortunately I lost three of my grandparent few years ago. I just have my grandma and I love her so much. I think it’s important to love and listen to the elderly. I have a friend called Lala she is my neighbor and lives in front of me. She is in her 80’s or so, and I enjoy talking to her. She has a good sense of humor. She is a very active lady. She goes outside and takes care of her plants and she sometimes makes me spaghetti. She also knows everything that goes on around the neighborhood. I admire her and I want to have that kind of energy when I am her age. She lives by herself but her son and daughter live right across from her and behind from her. Me, Lala, her son, and daughter are neighbors. I think that’s wonderful how she is surrounded with her son and daughter. I want to have good memories and be surrounded by people that will make me feel happy.

    1. I definitely agree that family will be the most important thing when I'm 90 as well. Love is the greatest thing anyone can bring to others and feel from others. When everything is said and done, it doesn't matter what you did as a career or how much money you had-it's how you loved and how loved you were. :]

    2. Older people are always fun to talk to and be around. They give me a new perspective of life and sometimes even influence my decisions. I think it's great that your neighbor LaLa is well taken care of by her children and i think that that is something that everyone will want when they are of age.

  4. If Dr. Schmoll gave me one billion dollars but I was still required to have a job, I would become a professional photographer and travel the world with my husband. First, of course, we would buy some new equipment and do some research to find the best camera setup possible. We would start a travel journal and co-write and photograph about where we travel. Instead of travelling on a budget after saving up for a while, we’d take extended vacations in the country and abroad. Our writing would focus on the landscape and culture of each place we travel to. We’d dine in the most exquisite restaurants and stay in the best rated hotels, as well as local favorites in order to explore the culture of where we travel. We would study the history and geography of the places we go and adventure a bit into the hard to find places and natural landmarks nearby. There are some drawbacks to a career like this, though. Though it would be very exciting, the quick pace that we would have to travel in order to meet deadlines for our journal would be stressful and wouldn’t allow time to really soak in the environment of the places we travel. We might see many places, but I’m not sure how much I could really enjoy being with my husband and being in beautiful places if it’s job. A job is a job, and though it can be enjoyable, it won’t be the same experience you would have if you enjoyed it away from work.

  5. If Dr. Schmoll would give me a billon dollars, my job would be relevant to my major. My major is human biology , so I could choose to have a job in the medical field, or any other field. For example, my job would be either a physician's assistant or a forensic science technician. I could also maybe have a job outside of my major. I could become maybe a wedding planner or an event planner. I would want to plan events like weddings, receptions, graduations, parties, etc. for a living. That would be fun to do everyday, seven days a week. If I had all of this money, all I would do is travel all around the world. I would mostly buy a nice house either in the Los Angeles area or the San Francisco Bay Area. I would also have one or two nice cars, like a Porsche or a Ferrari. The rest of the money left, I would save it for bills. Having a job would give me something to do. Having all the money and not really doing anything would become boring. Having a job that you love, whether it's related to your major or not, will give me something to do. It would give me some sort of a purpose of at least having a job or career to show that I can be an independent person.

    1. I wanted to be a forensic science technician before I wanted to be a teacher. I think human biology and DNA is so incredibly fascinating. That is for sure still one of my dream jobs. I would also love to be a wedding planner. I would love to plan that every day. Sometimes I think though that if you are doing your dream job, then you might lose your love and passion for what you are doing…that is why it is best to keep some things as your hobby instead of a dream job.

  6. The job that I would choose if money was of no concern would probably be very difficult to decide since there are many things that I like to do. The top two things that I didn’t think twice about though were becoming a clothing designer or an ancient site explorer. I am very fond of nice clothes, especially dresses, and have always had an appreciation for unique and beautiful clothing; I used to draw pictures about a possible dress that would start a trend or become famous. Although I do not love this job as much as some mainstream clothing designers do, I would really have fun with it and show all my creativity to the world by displaying my fashion sense. The other career that I would pursue if it wasn’t clothing designer would be an ancient site explorer. What I mean by ancient site explorer is a person who explores ancient sites like the pyramids to find the tomb of mummies or underground cities like the lost city of Atlantis. Another example is the people who searched for years for the missing titanic boat. Although this career sounds very scary sometimes it is exciting and never dull. The reason why I like this career is also because there is a lot of traveling involved and you have the opportunity to meet new places and new people. I also get to experience the thrill of adventure and mystery in the process of looking for these ancient sites or artifacts.

    1. Ever since I saw that movie 'The Lost City of Atlantis' I have been obsessed with finding it. I even wrote a paper on it in an Anthropology class. I know it is unlikely that it exists but it is so much fun to imagine dream about it. If anyone ever decides they want me to go searching with them I will happily accept the opportunity.

    2. I too, think being a fashion designer would be a really cool job. It is such a creative job. I took a sewing class/cooking class in high school and made pajama bottoms. It was a fun class but unfortunately I didn't continue to sew once I finished the class and basically forgot everything they showed me. I also love the idea of traveling the world and seeing amazing things.

  7. If I randomly received one billion dollars and still had to work, I would pursue a career as a critic; preferably a high-class hotel/resort critic. My job would require me to travel around the world to different hotels and resorts and try everything they have to offer. Then I would write about how much or how little I enjoyed my stay. I would take the time to try all the restaurants and go to all the events. Ever since I was little, being a hotel critic has been a dream of mine. In fact, originally I wanted to go to school to be a top-notch hotel manager. I applied for this expensive private school is Switzerland, Johnson and Wales University, and San Francisco State University with my goal in mind. Unfortunately, my parents did not share my enthusiasm when my admission letters came back, despite the scholarships I received to make my dream possible. They insisted that there was no way I would be able to make a living doing something so silly, especially in this economy. At their request, I entered CSUB majoring in engineering without the slightest interest in the subject. I have since switched to political science but I do find myself thinking about how much I would have enjoyed going to a school like that and having a career in which I could travel the world. So if one day I wake up and money is no object, I am finishing off my degree and jumping on a plane to Fuji to explore so resorts. Then I am uploading my thoughts to YouTube and starting a blog online. Maybe I can make some money, maybe I won’t. But at least I will have a career I care about.

    1. Hotel critic sounds like something fun too do. It would be like a vacation going from one hotel to another. It must of been hard letting go of that chance to go to those schools and doing what you wanted to do. But who knows, you could become a hotel critic one day if a chance again appears.

  8. If Dr. Schmoll were to give me one billion dollars and the only requirement would be for me to work, I would become an artist or an extra in movies. In high school, I took two years of ceramics and fell in love with it. When I did ceramics, it was very calming and I was able to express my creativity. Although I am most likely not as good as I used to be, I could just pay to take more classes until I became used to it again. After that, I would open my own shop where I would sell the different things I have made and have something similar to Color Me Mine/Paint a Dream. However, after receiving the money and I realize I don't like ceramics anymore, I would want to be an extra in movies. My uncle used to be an extra and was in many different movies, like The Terminal with Tom Hanks (but you can't see him in anything). He always had lots of memories and talks about when he got to meet the actors. I think it would be interesting to be able see how films are made, participate in the making of the film, and possibly be able to meet the actors involved in the film.

  9. In the upcoming 6 months my main goal is to stay physically active as possible. My main purpose for my goal is because I am really considering on joining the Marines or Army after i graduate and enroll in the Officer Candidate School. I want to be physically prepared as i can be. I haven't really told my parents yet, but I am pretty positive that they will allow me to join the military. Throughout the next 6 months, I am going to push myself physically as if a drill sergeant were yelling at me. The good thing about my goal is that i have already started about 2 months ago, so I am just going to continue to grind out numerous push ups, sit ups, pull ups, and run a lot this summer.

  10. If I received a billion dollars but still had to work, I would most likely be a campground host. I remember camping as a kid and wondering "how do they get to live here? I wish I could live here!" They always looked right at home; they had their camper, a little yard and sometimes even a dog or two. Plus they have those super cool golf carts they get to ride around in. I also love to be outside as much as possible and that's pretty much necessary as a campground host. I could keep the park/beach looking nice and make sure the guests had everything they needed. I would like to move to different parks throughout the year but ideally I would be at Carpinteria State Beach for at least 3 months out of the year. This could also be a way for me to travel around the country or even the world. The best memories that I've made have almost all been while camping with family and friends and I would love to be in a position to see beautiful places while creating more memories.

    2. My great aunt and uncle were campground hosts when I was growing up. They ran a campground at Bass Lake, which is one of the most beautiful spots in California. We would go and stay with them every year in the biggest cabin, called the cookhouse. 11. The comfort zone...The last time I was pushed out of it was when I decided to take a trip to San Francisco with no cars at all with two of my other friends. That was maybe 3 years ago? I believe so. Since then I just haven't had the personal funds to save up for that kind of trip again. That was incredible stuff. Using a train to get to San Fran, riding the bus, walking, using the trollies and subway systems for a week straight was a ton of fun. The sense of adventure I felt during that week of just figuring out where to go after leaving the hotel was a ridiculous amount of fun. It was probably the first time I actually pushed myself to do something totally different from my own lifestyle. I don't go out a whole ton so that was a pretty big deal for me. Walking all the way from our hotel to the Golden Gate Bridge was a long but memorable walk. I'm glad I went through with that experience instead of relying solely on one thing to carry us around a trip. While I did experience a little bit of anxiety of the unknown it quickly went away after a day or two of seeing what else the world can offer when you think outside the box and try something a little different. But yeah, that was the last time I pushed myself out of my comfort zone :). Tons of fun!

    2. San Francisco was great and scary when I was 16. A friend and I took a road trip to see Humboldt and along the way we stopped in San Francisco. We parked where we shouldn't have and her truck was towed with every bit of cash stuck inside. Some how I was able to find a $50 bill in my pocket and we were able to get a cab to the tow yard. Two valley girls stranded at 5pm must have been a funny sight. All was well and we were on our way in no time, but that is one trip I will never forget!

Jessica: haha that's crazy! The parking in San Francisco is ridiculous and I don't think many people realize how much easier it is here to drive compared to a place like San Fran haha. At least you will have some sort of memory to remember it by though :).

Diana: Agreed. This trip was my absolute favorite so far. Granted the beginning of this trip was full of stress, but it was well worth it after that initial day. I think everybody should experience something like this at least once :).

Ajaypal: It really was. I'm honestly not a very outgoing preson at all so this was definitely an attempt to get out of my own shell. The experience and the memories as you said were totally worth it. I think about that trip every now and then and it's full of good memories. You should try it! It's defintely worth your time :). 12. If I were given 1 billion dollars (Thank you, Dr S.) and the job I would love to have is to be a photographer. I love to travel and I would love to travel around the world to see other places I haven’t seen. This is something that I love to do at my time; just taking pictures makes me happy. First place I would visit is Europe. I was fascinated with the architectures, with very unique styles at every single detail of the buildings when I took the history of art when I was in community college. Especially the Roman styles. The churches, every corner of the building were just breathtaking to look at. All the statues, that were carved with great detail that look so real, especially during the medieval times and the paintings. Then I would go to China to see the Great Wall of China. I would go there and take pictures at sunset or sunrise to have the dramatic look while people are walking. I would also love to learn about their culture and ask how they came up with the unique styles of their buildings. France, is definitely a must see also because of the Eiffel tower. The places I mentioned would be the first on my list to visit. And every picture that I take will be the best treasures I’ve ever have. Being able to have the opportunity to travel with that money and with the job I love the most would be a heaven. Only if.

  13. To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken?

My life is definitely not the way that I had planned for my life to be. It is so often that you plan your whole life out and then your life gets turned upside down. I truly believe that God is control of everything and as long as you place your life in His hands, you don't have to worry about controlling the course your life will take. I have often led myself down certain courses in my life and the outcome was completely different than what I expected. The way my life has turned out is far better than anything I could have ever planned for myself. I am grateful that life has not gone my way and according to my plan. I would have missed out on so much. So in all honesty, I have not had much control over the course that my life has taken. I leave it up to God and have faith that He will make things great. I guess if you do not believe in God than you really don't understand what I am saying, but I whole heartedly believe in God and trust in Him.

I have four siblings, including myself. We were raised that family comes first. To always love your siblings unconditionally. I know that when I am 90 years old my family is all that I would need. If I needed someone to take care of me, I hope that my family would be there for me. If I needed money, I know my family will be there for me. They have proven this throughout my life thus far. I would definitely bring my parents to my home to care for them, when they could no longer care for themselves. I would hope that having my children see this, the love and attention I had given my parents, they would see this caretaking quality and take care of me. I don’t see this type of care as a burden. I would feel at ease, knowing my parents would be well taken cared for by me. Family is what matter most to me now and hopefully when I turn 90 years old.

I would like to travel everywhere around the world to find the best tasting dishes and learn how cook it. I would also write about my experience and give out recipes, so the whole world can enjoy it as well. This will give me a chance to travel the world and learn about other ethnicity cuisine and lifestyle. Imagine a life where you wake up to a new place and experience different delicious foods. That would be heaven. When I get a chance to watch tv shows, I find myself watching cooking show , especially with celebrity chef like Gordon Ramsey and Anthony Bourdain. I find it fascinating how they travel to all part of the word, finding great foods at places people don't expect. 17. Honestly, I’ve always had this fantasy where I get all this money (I haven’t figured out where the money comes from) but I am able to finally get all the things I want haha. However, hypothetically speaking, if I had one billion dollars handed to me, I would still like to pursue what I am currently attempting to pursue – to work with animals. I feel like part of life is living day by day with the good the bad and the ugly. A lot of the fun comes from having a goal and living each in an attempt to get closer than you were yesterday. Although, I’m not going to lie, having money would make things a little more interesting by being able to afford to take random trips and have spontaneous adventures. By having large amounts of money, you can basically now afford everything you have ever wanted. Yet, what comes after having what you most desired? Of course by having the job of your dreams or doing something that you enjoy would be so much fun. Furthermore, before having this hypothetical money you had a job to support yourself, now after all the money you can have a job just for fun or to keep you busy and occupied. In my case, I would like to do the right thing and donate, then I would invest, but I would like to have a job (job of my dreams) just because its something that I love to do.

  18. There are many jobs I would love to do. Travel to different countries and provide medical care, education for those without access. I would help restore run down neighborhoods and put resources in place to support struggling neighborhoods and the various difficulties they face. One of my greatest intrigues is the fungus that causes Valley Fever. Coccidioidomycosis has devastating affects in our valley and it would be exhilarating to find a way to stop its destructive capabilities among people and animals.
Ultimately teaching is my passion and I can't imagine any other career offering the same amount of satisfaction of giving a student (of any age) tools to personally succeed. I would like to one day teach child development at the college level, but for now I am looking forward to being a kindergarten teacher. Honestly, if I had been given one billion dollars, a huge chunk of that would end up being spent on my classroom, school, and students.

While it would be amazing to be a film director/producer, a nurse, or a musician, the thought of being a librarian has always been something that I’ve pondered and believed that I would enjoy. To be approached by eager individuals in search of childhood fairy tales or the latest heart wrenching novels seems really exciting. The thought of being surrounded by small children who haven’t traveled to the Land of Oz with Dorothy, contemplated tesseracts with Meg and Charles Wallace, or laughed at the predicaments Junie B. Jones gets herself into, truly motivates me to share these stories with others. To be able to hold conversations with people about Joan Lowery Nixon, Roald Dahl, Christopher Pike, Charlotte Bronte, or even H.P. Lovecraft would get my adrenaline going.

    1. This is exactly why I want to be an elementary school teacher! I want to help little kids, but I agree it would be cool to be asked by little kids about fairytale books, and older books I've read when I was a child.

  20. Ooo! If I had a billion dollars I would start my own business. I think an entertainment activity center would be fun! I could have a bunch of inflatable jumpers and trampolines. That would be so fun! Coming into work would be so fun for me every day. I could even have an indoor pool with trampolines around it so you can jump in! Also a lot of slip n slides and taller slides! It would kind of be a mini water park slash workout center. I would also add some party rooms for those who would like to have parties there. I would have a snack bar that would sell various healthy and unhealthy foods. Each room would be its own theme. I would have fun party music playing throughout the building for people to dance to. All ages 6 and up are welcome. I saw on tv one time somewhere in LA they have a workout center with a bunch of padded trampolines and it looked like so much fun to me. Kids and adults can both have fun while burning some extra calories. Even though this would be a fun job there would still be a lot of liabilities to worry about especially in a facility like this. A job is a job, so even though owning a job like this would be fun, I still would have to get up every day and take care of the responsibilities that come along with it. Having so much money takes the stress off of worrying if you can afford certain things, and paying bills.

  21. If I suddenly had a billion dollars I think I would have two options of what kind of job I’d like to work. At this point on life I’ve already been in school for 3 years of my life, so I would finish the set path for psychology. I like my major. I genuinely loved the idea of helping others. I think if money was no option I’d make sure to go all the way up to PHD status, and really help as many people as I can. Although I love my current major, if I had the choice before I probably would have studied music. I would have worked as a music composer, or even a backup musician for so band or singer. I currently can play 3 instruments, but I would’ve first learned to play them professionally and then set out to compose music for other. I’m really ambitious so I think I’d say that I also would have written books. Musicians and Authors don’t necessarily have a set career path. Psychology was the most realistic profession out of all of the ones that I would’ve chosen, so since money is important in reality I chose this path. I don’t believe that one is better than the other, I just think that as far as the career that I would find joy in everyday would involve more creativity.

  22. If I were given a billion dollars, and money was no issue, the job I would choose is anthropology, specifically archaeology. I took an introductory anthropology class, for my general education, last quarter and found it very intriguing. The main thing I like about archaeology is that you don’t have to sit behind a desk all day. From what I heard from my professor, it involves a lot of traveling and hiking. Traveling to other cities, other countries, and exploring new things sounds fascinating. I enjoy learning about past and present cultures as well as history, both of which play an important part in archaeology. Another reason why this job sounds interesting to me is because of the Indiana Jones movies and playing Tomb Raider. I know these movies and games greatly exaggerated the job description, but I still think archaeology is a fun and interesting job.

  23. In the next six months I don’t think I can say that I have one big goal rather than many little ones. Many of my goals revolve around my finances. I hope that within six months I can get on steady financial savings plan for that like I used to have before I used all of my car money to pay for school. With that being said, I am definitely someone who values an experience more than having a lot of money so in the next six months I hope to make many amazing memories by going on vacations and seeing live music. I hope that I can get comfortable with my new school schedule and new work schedule because its still feels overwhelming to me. In the next six months I would love more than anything to go on a performance development plan to become the store manager of the store I work for, Francesca’s collections. I guess when you put all of my little goals for the next six months together they make one big goal of being happily successful.

  24. I think when I am 90 years old what will matter most to me is my family and my health. I want my family to love me and not take me for granted. I also want to be able to do things on my own and not be put in a home. That is why I also chose health because I want to be able to do everyday things. Of course, I would not drive but would hope that I could have company at home. I also want to be able to meet all my family because by the time I am 90 years old I should have a lot of family. I also want to be the family grandma that is not grouchy and be able to give my grandchildren candy. Hopefully I can live to an old age when I can have children and become a grandma because I love all my grandparents so much and love to hear all their stories. Sometimes they even share funny stories about my parents that I never knew about. Right now I have two grandmas ones 87 and the other ones 80 years old. I have one living grandpa from my father’s side whose 85 and he has a farm where he still does most of the work.

  25. When I am 90 years old, I will look back at the choices I made in life and appreciate every single little detail, because it would make me the person I am in the future. I would be most content by being surrounded with those who love me, and just spend quality time with them. If I was given a billion dollars, I would probably still find a job somewhere related with customer service and helping people. I find satisfaction in knowing that I was able to help someone and guide them, whenever they were in need. I truly pushed my boundaries when I started working at Paramount Farms. Working full time and attending school full time is no easy task, and at times I felt like quitting my job due to the mental and physical stress that it would cause. However, after some time I would begin to feel satisfaction and I realized that I actually enjoyed working there, as an administrative assistant. I figured if I could get through this, I could achieve anything I set my mind to. I would like to think that I have controlled my life fairly close to what I imagine it to actually be. Whenever I feel like I need to start a new chapter in my life, I go ahead and flip the page and start writing again. I am not afraid of trying new things or pushing myself, because I know that every move I make, whether bad or right, will help me grow in the long run. My number one goal for the next six months will be to work hard at my job, and in school, since I am so close to graduating. I believe that JFK meant that we shouldn’t only talk the talk, but walk the walk. It is nice to hear that someone has dreams and aspirations for themselves, but it is even nicer to see that person make their dreams come true.
