WEEKLY WORK IN 305

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY

(a reminder, in this section, you need to write your 250 word blog entry AND respond to two classmates)

Introduce yourself to the class.
You might consider some of the following questions:
Where are you from?
What is your major?
Why are you taking an online course?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite food?
What is the farthest you have traveled from home?
What did you do over Winter Break?

Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.

Return later in the week to reply to classmates.

  1. Good morning everyone,

My name is Jon and I am enrolled in English 305 with the rest of you. Originally I am from a small mountain town named Pine Mountain located in-between Los Angeles and Bakersfield. Most people have not heard of it and that is a good thing. I am a nursing major taking this online course to satisfy the GWAR before I graduate. I chose nursing as it is a good stepping stone to various graduate schools. My favorite book is “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk. It is a favorite because it was one of the few books that made me look at the relationship between myself and the connection with my material objects. My favorite food can be burgers or sushi depending upon the day. The farthest I have traveled from home would be to Europe, with Germany being the farthest country visited after I graduated high school. The Euro-trip consisted of going to England, France, Amsterdam, Germany, Austria, and Italy over a twenty day period; it was probably the most amazing consecutive twenty day period of my life. I am proud to say that I have seen an argument in over five different languages. Over the break I worked, went fishing and made plans to go to the Firestone Brewery sometime in the upcoming weeks. I look forward to it as I have only been to one other brewery in my life, The Heineken Museum, in Amsterdam. Other interests include outdoor activities, cooking, imbibing, reading, learning new things, and making the most of the 1440 minutes in a day.

    Respond when you can,
    Jon

    1. Did the movie 'Fight Club' do the book any justice?

    2. Jon, we have to reminisce about the Heineken Factory. When I was there, in 1989, it was only one dutch gilder to get in--50 cents. How much was it for you, like 5 Euros? Dang that euro! It is truly a fabulous place!

    3. Sounds very exciting! Sounds like you're having fun but keeping things reasonable. You've got to try Stone Brewing Co. Fantastic! It's interesting to see that you found new perspective reading "Fight Club" of all books. That's great. How do you see your connection between yourself and material objects now?

    4. Jon, I always wished to be from a small mountain town, being that I love the outdoors. Sounds awesome.

    5. Michelle unfortunately I watched the movie before I read the book, but I still think that the movie did do justice as it was because of the movie that I read the book. Sometimes that is the order people think is backwards but works sometimes. What do you think??

Professor it was 8 Euros in 2007, which was a lot more than a dutch glider but still a good experience. Do you think the concept of World money, the Amero, or even the Euro makes the dollar worth less?

Susie I still like material objects...... my guitar makes me happy. But maybe it is not the guitar but the music that makes me happy. Music is universal but the guitar is mine. Does that mean the music it makes can be owned? What do you think?

      Abigail.... thanks for responding.

  2. Hi everybody,
My name is Kristine and like everyone on this blog, I am enrolled in English 305. I'm from a city in Northern California named Vacaville, which is in between Sacramento and San Francisco. Before I lived in Vacaville, I also lived in cities named Fairfield and Richmond, which are both in Northern California as well. I moved to Bakersfield in the fall of 2011 to start school at CSUB. I could've gone to other schools near where I'm from but it would of made me have a longer commute and going over the bridges everyday. I came to CSUB because I have family here and my commute to campus would not be too long. My major at first was nursing but I changed it to human biological sciences. I changed majors because nursing became too stressful for me and changing my major to human biological sciences helped me not feel to stressed. I'm taking this online course to satisfy the GWAR before I graduate from CSUB. My favorite book or books would have to be the "American Girl" books and the "Sweet Valley" books. I grew up reading those books all the time and they are still my favorite books still to this day. The "American Girl" books made me see how the era was from a young girl's point of view. The "Sweet Valley" books showed me the happy and sad times between twin sisters from when they were children to when they became adults. The books also made me see the relationship between the twin sisters. My favorite food ranges from different types of food. My favorite types of food is mostly Italian, like pasta and pizza, seafood, sushi, hot dogs, burgers, and some Mexican food, like quesadillas, tacos, and burritos. The farthest I have traveled from home was to Atlanta, Georgia, and that was only to get on another flight going back to California from a family reunion held in Alabama. Over the break, I just went home just to visit my parents, my siblings, and my nieces who live in California because my parents, my siblings, and most of my mom's side of the family live in Northern California. One thing I really like doing in my free time is traveling. I don't like staying in one place for a really long time.
So that's my background, you can respond at any time,
    Kristine

    1. Hey Kristine. I've never heard of Vacaville so that's pretty cool. Since it's in norther California I bet the weather is nice there. I have read a few books from the "Sweet Valley" series as well but I don't remember much.

    2. The weather in Vacaville is kind of like Bakersfield, it gets really hot during the summer months because Vacaville is kind of inland. I haven't read the "Sweet Valley" books in awhile.

  3. Hi everyone,
My name is Richard and i am currently a junior enrolled in English 305. I am from a city called Salinas which is located in northern California close to San Jose and Gilroy. I moved to Bakersfield in the summer of 2011 to attend a summer program that CSUB was offering during the time. I was offered to go to many universities, but I ended up choosing CSUB because i have relatives living here, and it is cheaper than other CSU. My major is criminal justice, and i am taking this class to fulfill the GWAR requirement. One of the most recent books i have read and is also one of my favorites is the Ramayana by R.K. Narayan. This book is the pride and joy of the Hindu religion it contains exaggerated depictions of deities and their teachings. I am not of the Hindu religion, but when i read this book and it was nice to read something of another religion, and how i could still relate to it. My favorite food is wings. I prefer mild and or lemon pepper wings. I never really travel unless it is for a good reason. The farthest i have traveled from Salinas is probably Bakersfield. Over the break, I went back to Salinas and visited my friends and family there. On New Years Day, i had to drop off my grandparents at the airport because they were going back to the Philippines. I do not know when they are returning to the U.S., but not anytime soon. My winter break mainly consisted of playing basketball for hours, and spending time with friends and family.

    1. Richard, you should drive to Arvin, and then the farthest you will have been from home is Arvin. And then, on another weekend, Tehachapi! Just keep inching away from Salinas until you hit an ocean!

    2. Actually now that i think of it i have been to Tehachapi Dr. Schmoll. It is a very small town, and is probably the reason why i did not like it.

    3. Richard, criminal justice is an awesome major. I used to want to be a detective or a lawyer when I was little. I still think it would be really cool, but for some reason I opted out and went for English. Salinas is where Steinbeck is from! I've been there to see it because my dad has always been into showing us old famous places or places he thought was interesting. You should definitely follow Dr. Schmoll's advice and drive until you hit the ocean.

    4. Hi Richard, I've just read the Ramayana for Religious Studies 320 last quarter. Did you also read it for that class? I also found some of the teachings of the Ramayana to be quite relatable.

    5. Yes, I read it for that class. You were probably in my class because i took it last quarter. I think it was the best book we were assigned to read for that class.

  4. Hello everyone,
I am Tyler Carcamo, a 20 year old senior Chemistry major hoping to graduate in June. You might be now wondering how am I 20yo and about to graduate college, well that answer is simple. I was born/raised in a tiny Central American Country called Belize. It has beautiful waters and a plethora of mangoes to sample from. The official language of the country is English however there are many other languages and dialect spoken. I speak English, English Creole (which is very different from French creole and similar to patwa or patois that Jamaicans speak), and Spanish. In Belize I stated 1st grade at the age of 4. I moved from Belize to American about 8 years ago. The transition was a bit weird at first, but I got accustomed to the culture. Now I am here writing this blog. I choose Engl 305 with Dr. Schmoll for three reasons: he was AWESOME!!!!! in Hist 231, it was was an online (I need the time to study for my medical school exam, the MCAT) and I wanted to take a writing class to become a better writer. My goal for the class is to be able to write a glorious personal statement for medical school and also just to be good at writing. I can eat pizza everyday and I love all types of food especially Indian, Mexican, and Thai. I have two long trips that I will never forget: a trip driving to Portland, OR that took 19 hrs and a trip to Ghana, which took about 20 hrs flying. I love to play basketball, so you might run into me at the rec center on campus. Unfortunately, I did not get to play basketball over winter break since I was too busy studying for my MCAT. Hope everyone had a great spring break and is ready for the spring quarter!!!!

    Much Love and Respect,
    T.C.

Also, heavens, this English Creole language sounds fascinating. Is that from Haiti? Is it like Gullah in South Carolina? Intriguing!

    2. Hi Tyler, that is awesome that you are graduating soon. Also, thats great that you know three languages. I only know two, English and Spanish.

      Delete
    3. Dr. Schmoll, the English Creole is different from that of Haiti, I believe they speak the french kind and also have some influence from the D.R. (learnt that from a Latin American History and an ethnic lit class). It is quite similar to the Gullah in South Carolina but models more how that of the patwa from Jamaica. A phrase might be "weh pah di bwai deh?" which means "where is the boy?"

Cecillia, people often get surprised by my age. The funny thing is that I didn't like sharing that info with people when I was much younger. However since college it has been easier to share!

    4. Wow, I'm impressed. I don't even know you and I am proud of you. I have a friend that finished his residency at KMC and is now working at a local pediatrician's office. It's good to see that you have overcome insecurities you had with revealing your young age. It is definitely something to be proud of. Many of us have to struggle and work very hard to understand and retain half the information that I am sure you can. Your own hard work and accomplishments are always something to acknowledge proudly, yet humbly. Best of wishes on your MCAT!

    5. what a great accomplishment to get your BS degree at age 20 in chemistry. congrats!!!! that's awesome!

    6. That is so crazy and so awesome that you are from a different country. Was it hard getting used to our culture?? Good luck on your future and on all of your tests!! It is so awesome that you are getting your degree and you are only 20!! I love that you are taking this class to become a better writer!! I believe that you should always continue to keep learning.

  5. Hello all,
My name is Julie and I was born and raised in Bakersfield. I am a junior at CSUB. I am a math major (teaching track). I have recently decided to attend school on a full-time basis. I was previously employed with a high school district for nine years. It was there that I decided to pursue my goal as a high school math teacher. I have two wonderful children and a very supported husband that has allowed and encouraged me to become a full-time student. While I may be older than most students at CSUB, I hope to graduate next spring. I am taking this course to fulfill the graduate writing requirement at CSUB. I am a math major and thus writing/reading are not my strongest subjects. Therefore, I also don't have a favorite book. Over the break I went to San Diego to celebrate a close friends bachelorette party. I have been a friend of hers for over 15 years. Friendship and family are very important to me. I take pride in my the large close nit family. One of my favorite things we do as a family is to attend church on Sundays. After church we go out to eat breakfast then go to my parents house to hang out the rest of the day. For dinner my father cooks, which is usually some type of BBQ. We also travel together. Last year my immediate family members, all fifteen of us went to Puerto Vallarta. Puerto Vallarta is the farthest place I have traveled to. I can't wait to read everyone's post. I also wish you all a successful spring quarter.

    1. Wow Julie, that sounds like my Sundays used to be before I started shift work. I would enjoy sundays the same I have a large immediate family and dads sunday BBQ was always something to look forward to. Now it is difficult to spend time with family because I work a graveyard shift when everyone else in the world is sleeping, I am awake. When everyone is starting their day, I am going to sleep. I am super amped by 10:00pm. LOL

    2. Hi Julie,
I love that you have such a close family! Mine is also very close. I just got married, so it's been difficult for them to only see me Saturday nights when we come over for "game night" to play board games, so we also come over for lunch after church on Sundays. My dad also loves to cook, and I have learned to cook from his example. Good luck this quarter!

  7. Hi there,
My name is Noelle, and I am a junior at CSUB. My major is Human Biological Sciences, but it was previously Nursing. I am a medical assistant at an urgent care right now. Working there made me realized that I do not enjoy working back office like giving shots. However, I do enjoy the lab work, and it is the reason why I switched majors. I am taking this course for the GWAR requirement. I moved to Bakersfield in January 2013, but I am from Huntington Beach in Orange County, CA. I am still getting use to the weather because I miss the breezes from the beach. I do go back to visit my family and do errands every month. My favorite food is Thai food, and I am still looking for a great place here in Bakersfield. Suggestions would be great, but I doubt it would be as great as the ones I had. I believe I tried five different Thai food places so far (with the help of friends and Yelp), but I did not feel it was authentic enough. Lately, I been loving Salty’s barbeque and Mama Roomba, so I think it evens out. The farthest I traveled from home is the east coast like New York, New Jersey etc. Every summer, I used to visit my uncle in Pennsylvania, and he would take me throughout the east coast. The sad thing about it is that I never left the United States, not even to Mexico. I wish in the future, I would have enough money and time to travel around the world. Over winter break, I went to Las Vegas for me and my boyfriend’s birthday. It is a tradition; we go every December.

    3. Good morning Noelle,
I am not sure if you've heard about Chef's Choice Noodle Bar, it's a Thai/Japanese restaurant downtown, which is actually down the street from Mama Roomba! I was there a couple weeks ago, and it was my first time trying Thai food. I thought it was delicious!

    4. Hey Noelle, growing up in Huntington Beach must have been nice for you. I've never been to Huntington Beach, but I hope I can be able to visit the town someday.

    5. Dr. Schmoll,
Before I made any friends here, I depended on Yelp. Haha. I am looking forward to the restaurant paper we have to do. Maybe I will use Elizabeth's suggestion about the Chef's Choice.

Yes, Cecilia. I understand you completely about giving shots to babies. The one thing that actually freaked me out was when this kid kicked me after I gave her the shot. =/

Thanks Elizabeth for the suggestion. I always heard about it, but every time I tried to go, they were closed. Their menu look more fusion than authentic, but I still heard great things about their duck noodle dish. I will definitely try it when I get a chance.

Hi Kristine, it was nice. I miss riding my beach cruiser at the beach. You should visit there if you have the chance. Go through PCH, and it will lead you all the way down from Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, etc. It's beautiful driving through at sunset.

  8. Hello everybody,
My name is Michael Johnston and I am a junior at CSUB. I major in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. I've lived here in Bakersfield for my entire life and hope to move on from here after I finish my path to becoming a CPA. To be honest, it took a long time to figure out what I wanted to be. I went to BC first then transferred to CSUB. It took longer than it needed to, but after various classes I finally decided what I wanted to do. Also, I am taking this course because it meets the GWAR requirement. I do not read many books. The only book I actually enjoy reading are the "Fables" comic book series. Fantastic stories, if anybody is interested in reading them. My favorite food has to be baby back ribs! I love them. I could probably eat them forever and never get bored, to be honest. The farthest I have traveled from home is probably San Diego. I go there from time to time with the family just to go to Sea World or enjoy the beautiful scenery of the various beaches surrounding San Diego. To be quite frank, I did nothing over winter break that was very productive. I spent the week chilling with friends, family, and myself. Games, movies, TV, etc. After last quarter's stressful 11 weeks I felt I definitely needed some time to unwind. I look forward to this class and can tell that this should be an interesting experience. I enjoy writing and am most looking forward to the restaurant paper. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this class and I hope everyone's quarter goes well!

  9. Hi all, my name is Jessica and I am a junior majoring in Child Adolescent Family Studies. My plan is to be a kindergarten or transitional-kinder teacher. I was born in San Luis Obispo, I have lived on the central California coast from birth to 10, Alabama for 3 years, and Coalinga, CA for 19 years. My family and I moved to Bakersfield two years ago and it has been a great transition. Taking this course online was to help balance out my time away from home. I am a 34 year old mother of three children between the ages of 14 and 5. Choosing a favorite book is difficult, but I read and meditate on the Bible regularly. I can read just about anything and find something I enjoy about it, especially if it makes me think. I love a good discussion about differing opinions and getting to know other people.
I am very excited to be taking this course. The Winter Quarter I took English 101 with Professor Dell'Amico and although I thoroughly enjoyed it, the class brought to my attention my need to "clean up" my writing. My essays had far too many "awkward sentences" for my liking. I love to write about anything and I want to be able to do it really well. My two passions in life are my family and children. There is something so wonderful when you are able to watch a child grow and learn and to know that you helped guide them along. I have worked as a preschool teacher and decided that furthering my education would give me more tools to be a better educator.

  10. Hi everyone,

My name is Michelle and I am currently a junior at CSUB. I am originally from D.C but moved to Murrieta, California during my high school years to follow my parents on a Californian adventure. For those who do not know, Murrieta is a suburban town between San Diego and Los Angeles. Honestly, there is not much there except cookie cutter homes and families to match. In other words, it is exceptionally boring but, coming from the city; a lack of excitement is welcome. Currently, I am majoring in Political Science with an American concentration I do plan to go to law school but concentrating in Pre-law did not really appeal to me since I have 4 years of law to look forward to; seriously what is the rush? I have taken other online courses in the past and I have done well. Although taking the GWAR test would be easier, I need the units in order to graduate on time. Also, online classes do not require on campus meetings therefore making overloading credits easier. Reading is my favorite activity so I cannot choose one book but I did read a series over spring break. It's titled 'The Fixed Trilogy' and it was super cheesy, predictable, and funny so I give it 5 stars. I also saw Divergent twice over break. I read that series as well and I appreciated the movie. I love pizza with all my heart and clogged arteries. If I did not have to worry about health I would eat it every day, three times a day, and never get tired of it. The farthest I have traveled from home is my trip from Hershey, Pennsylvania (where I attended boarding school for a year) to Mexico. This remains the only time that I have traveled outside of the US. A few random facts about me include: I love KPOP, Concerts, Books, Movies, my Kindle, Tumblr, the internet, and sleeping. I pride myself in purposefully subscribing to as many clichés and stereotypes of our generation so I have something to look back on when I am old, gray, and tired.

    Happy to meet you all,
    Michelle

Hey Allison! yes and no. Yes because you have to wear uniforms and do chores and go to class but they do not give you nearly as much freedom as they show in the movies. Having fun without supervision was impossible.

  11. Hi everyone, my name is Romalyn Cordova and I am a transfer student from COS. Originally, I was born and raised in the Philippines and I moved to US about eight years ago. I resided at a small town called Woodlake near Visalia, in a country side. It’s a private property and I love living there mainly because it is quiet. However, I would like to live a big city to experience the city life such as San Diego which I always dream off and I will make it happen, no buts. I speak three dialects and also learning Spanish which I find it easy to speak due to some similarities that my native language speaks. I chose to come to CSUB because I heard that they have a great nursing program. Yes, I am majoring in Nursing and hopefully next year, I will be in the program. But if nursing does not work for me, I am looking for a physical therapist major as a backup plan. I am also minoring in CAFS which I find it interesting and easy for me since I have a lot of experience working with children. I am taking this class because it is required to graduate and I am looking forward what this class has to offer. English is not my strongest but I will work hard to pass this class. My favorite book is “A Child called It”. My favorite food is adobo with steamed rice, a Filipino main dish. I travelled to Reno, Nevada about six years ago. Last summer, I went to work at a Camp in Maine and I am going back again this upcoming summer because I fell in love with the place and my job. I was a tennis instructor and a bunk counselor. Over the winter break, I stayed home most of the time. I went to visit my friends in Fresno, Modesto and hangout with my best friend. I wish everyone success for this spring quarter. 

  12. Good afternoon everyone,
My name is Cecilia, and like everyone in this blog has already mentioned I am also enrolled in English 305. I was born here in Bakersfield California, but I grew up in a small town known as Lost Hills and that’s where you can say I am really from. My major is Liberal Studies with no concentration. Before CSUB I was attending Bakersfield College. I first started school to become a nurse but decided it wasn’t for me, so I changed my major. Currently, I am a senior at CSUB and I am hoping to graduate this June. I choose to take this online course because I have previously taken other online courses, and I liked the experience of being able to connect with students and my professor online. I am taking this course to fulfill the GWAR requirement and heard great things about Professor Schmoll. My favorite book is Syrup even though it is an oldie. Recently they have come out with the movie version of the book and it is on Netflix. As far as my favorite food, I have tons. I enjoy eating Italian pastas, Mexican pozole, tamales, and all that good stuff. I also enjoy hamburgers and boneless wings. The farthest I have traveled from home is to Las Cruces, New Mexico. I went last summer for a friend’s wedding and only stayed for a couple days. During the winter break I traveled to Medford, Oregon to visit family on my fiancé side of the family and to relax and of course go shopping. In Oregon there is no tax on items you purchase and it is a gorgeous place to go hiking. Also, it was a new experience because in Oregon they have an attendant pump your gas, which was something I had to get used to. I look forward to this quarter to better my writing skills and to experience this blog because I have never used a blog before to communicate.

    2. Cecilia, we shared the experience of going to Oregon!!!! I went to go watch Belize play the USA in soccer for the first time in history for the gold cup. It was an amazing feeling when you bought something and the price was the same--and not like $10 more.

    3. Hi Cecilia,
I remember trying to pump my own gas in Oregon and the attendant practically had a heart attack! I had no idea about that rule and it still seems silly to me. My husband and I went on a hike at the trail of 10 falls while we were in Oregon and it was absolutely beautiful. I don't blame you for taking advantage of there being no tax on things, I did the same thing!

  13. Hello classmates my name is Diana Salcedo. This year is the second year attending CSUB and I have definitely learned a lot so far! I was born and raised most of my life here in Bakersfield although I did live in Washington during most of my elementary school years, which explains why I don’t mind the cold when it comes. My major is Psychology because I enjoy working with people. As much as I like interacting with people, I decided to take an online class because I have not taken one before and would like to see if this works better for me than lectures or not. Also, I think online classes are great because they are more flexible to my schedule. I can take them with me anywhere I go or complete my work at the time that is convenient for me, which is very great. I am very easy to talk to and get along with as long as you don’t offend me. A few of the things that would describe me would be idealistic, a pizza, fries, and chicken lover, active, and random sometimes. I like to be involved in group projects and enjoy being in a crowd, which is one of the reasons I feel I am going to end up living in NYC or at least walking in their streets. My favorite colors are green and blue but I don’t have an unfavorite color because they’re all good in some way. As far as books go, I don’t really like to read much but if it grabs my attention I will read. When I do read it is usually in the topics of psychology like understanding the mind or the interpretations of interactions by the mind etc. I hope I will learn a lot from you guys through this online class.

  15. Greetings,
My name is Gabriela. I was born in Bakersfield, but didn’t actually live here until I was about 6 years old. Prior to moving to Bakersfield, my family and I lived somewhere between Lamont and Arvin in a house surrounded by fields that for the most part thrived with crops. As of last quarter I am a Human Biological Sciences major and am currently enrolled in this course in order to satisfy the GWAR. It is very difficult for me to decide what my favorite book is because growing up my mom encouraged me to read a lot and I fell in love with so many different books and authors. My favorite book as of now would have to be Ordinary People by Judith Guest (which is also an excellent film, in my opinion). My favorite book series is without a doubt L. Frank Baum’s Oz series and my favorite author is Joan Lowery Nixon. I can’t decide on what my favorite food is, but three of my top five contenders would have to be enchiladas Potosinas (which don’t look a thing like what most people think of when they see or hear the word enchilada), sushi rolls, and chicken in general. The farthest I have traveled from home is to San Luis Potosi, Mexico. My family travels there by car, so it takes us about three days to get to San Luis Potosi. I really enjoy traveling by car to get there because I get experience the vast differences between California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and countless Mexican cities such as Monclova, Monterrey, and Saltillo. Over the break I spent a day in Morro Bay, but for the most part loafed around at home listening to the Mars Volta and watching Marx Brothers films and a handful of 80s movies.

I wish everyone taking this course good luck!

    1. Hi Gabriella,
My family is from Zacatecas, so usually we would also travel by car. Honestly, I never really liked it. I felt like it always took forever! But I can relate to appreciating the stark scenic differences between states, especially Arizona.

    2. HI Gabriela,
Traveling in a car really is a great way to spend some one on one time with your family and friends. I am so excited to add everyone's book suggestions to my summer reading list. "Ordinary People" was just added.
I'm curious to know your top three favorite 80's movies. I hope you have a great quarter.

  16. Hello fellow classmates and Dr. Schmoll. My name is Allison Kemper.
I am from Lancaster and lived in the same house my whole life, until I started college in 2011, then I moved here to Bakersfield. I'm majoring in Psychology. I am taking this online class because I feel that I have much more flexibility and can do the work when I have time, I like them more than face to face classes. Although I do not read as much as I would like to, my favorite book would have to be Chinese Cinderella: The Secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah. I read it for the first time when I was in middle school, but it was one of the few books I actually reread. However, most books that attract me are mystery. My favorite food is pasta. It is one of the easiest and cheapest things to make, but it taste so good. It has been my favorite food my whole life. My favorite place to eat it Taco Bell, it is always my number one choice when choosing where to eat out. The farthest place I have ever traveled is Minnesota. My family has a little cottage on a lake in an extremely small town called Ottertail. My family and I travel to Ottertail almost every year and stay for two weeks. I love the weather there, it is much cooler than Lancaster in the summer. On Winter Break I did not do anything too eventful. I mainly spent time with family and friends, slept, and ate yummy food! Even though it may not sound like fun to most people, I had a fantastic break.
    Good luck everyone!

    2. Why Taco Bell? What do they have that Chipotle does not?

    3. Michael, Minnesota is gorgeous! I live in the desert and here in Bakersfield it is basically desert like; Minnesota is the opposite. There is green everywhere and lakes galore. :)
I've only been to San Diego twice and the last time was when I was twelve, but I'm sure it is amazing. I bet you get this all the time, but what made you decide to come to Bakersfield instead of staying in San Diego? It seems so much better and cooler.

Michelle, I love Chipotle, but nothing compares to taco bell! :)

      Delete
    4. I wish I lived in San Diego! I've never lived there, to be honest. I've visited it enough times to know the city quite well, though! I love it there :). Definitely beats Bakersfield in pretty much every category haha. Minnesota sounds awesome then! I definitely prefer that kind of environment than the environment of a desert...like...here, lol.

  17. Good morning everyone,
My name is Elizabeth. I am a Bakersfield native, and have lived here for most of my life. In 2008 I moved to a small town near Seattle called Auburn, WA. I lived there for two years and had a wonderful time. It is always raining, the people are great, and it snows in the winter (there is actual snow on Christmas!). I undoubtedly had some adjusting to do when I first moved there, since it is the complete opposite of Bakersfield. Then I moved back and graduated from Bakersfield High School. I am now a junior majoring in Biology and aspiring to become a Veterinarian. I am an animal lover; therefore, refuse to eat anything with a face. I am taking this class in order to satisfy the GWAR requirement and hoping to become a better writer, so it’s a win win situation. At the moment I do not have a favorite book. I realized that the books I read go in accordance to a certain phase in my life. For example, I went through the Twilight phase (yes, I know), then it was Nicholas Sparks phase. The point is, that I have yet to find my all time favorite book. The furthest I have traveled from home is to Mexico, but I would love to someday visit Europe, especially Spain. I did not do many eventful things over spring break, but I did catch up on sleep. In my spare time I like to craft, play tennis, and run outdoors.
Hope you all have an excellent day,
    Elizabeth.

  18. Hi and Good morning
My name is Cristina Valdez. I am trying to get my Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies. I've switched majors so I'm hoping I stick with this. I was born in Merced, CA. I did most of my growing up in Madera, CA. Then, in 2007 I moved to Arvin. I wasn't living in the city but outside it, close to Grapevine. I have mostly always lived outside the city. I've lived surrounded by vineyards. I currently am living in Bakersfield which is nice because everything is closer and I don't spend so much on gas. Over the weekend I go back to Arvin which is pleasant away from the city noise. I'm not much of a reader the most I have ever read was the Twilight Saga. I have also read Of Mice and Men few months ago, I really liked it, but I felt very sad at the end. I have also enjoyed the books that they made me read in high school like 1984 and Lord of the Flies. I'm actually looking forward to reading the books required for this class. For my Winter Break I was working. I am a Tutor. I'm currently still working hopefully will finish in 2 weeks. It is not easy working with young children. Some can absolutely melt your heart. They can be the cutest things. But others can be a nightmare. The students I'm working with now can be a bit to much to handle but really, really deep down I do love them. I have been to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Reno, Salt Lake City, and Guadalajara in Mexico. I'd like to go to Italy. I have a Aunt who is a Nun and is living in Italy. Things I like to do is see fashion magazines, look at fashion hauls and beauty tutorials, and walk around in the mall.
I'm excited to start class and get to know you all.

    1. Well Cristina, I feel your pain. I work as a Juvenile Corrections Officer, and I know how horrible minors can be. They can really test your patience and I am not teaching them, I'm just there for their safety and security. I'm sure they are easier to deal with when they are not criminals.

      Delete
    2. Cristina, I also plan to teach. I give you much credit to teach elementary students. I have often helped my own children's teachers and it's a lot of work. I am exhausted before noon. I have worked with high school students for several years and have found my passion working with high school students.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I get exhausted very easily. And I have to say I don't really get sick but I have gotten sick lately. I was sick like one month ago and now I feel sick again. Its the children that have gotten me ill. I haven't tutored high school kids the oldest that I have is 7th and 8th graders. I was a bit afraid of tutoring the oldest kids but its not that bad. They are not as cute as the little ones but they are cool to joke around with. It's funny because my 8th grader had to read about Amelia Earhart and she didn't know who she was. She didn't want to read about her so I told her that she was a blind aviator. And she believed me. She read the passage and was confused because she was waiting to read about her being blind. I had to tell her the truth. But really, how does she not know about Amelia Earhart.

      Delete
    4. I understand how difficult it is to tutor kids but I also think that a tutor has a huge opportunity to build the childs' self esteem and get them excited about learning because the tutor is working closer with the kid than a teacher might get the opportunity to.

  19. Good Afternoon Everyone. My name is Chelsea Dixon. I was actually born and raised in Bakersfield California. It’s a bit ironic at times because, I have a terrible sense of direction and get lost fairly easily here. I’m a psychology major. I honestly had no idea what to major in entering into college, so I picked the first thing that I could think of when I as prompted. Although I picked psychology by chance, I honestly started to love the subject. I decided to take an online course this quarter because, this is my first quarter dealing with theme classes. At this point I’m used to the quarter system, but the work load can be intensive. Although online classes have an equally heave amount of work I felt that my focus would be better if one of my classes was formatted in a way that catered to my time to some extent. I read quite a bit so I find it hard to pick a specific book. Recently I’ve been reading a series call “The Arcana Chronicles” by Kresley Cole. The books are interesting if you’re okay with dystopian settings. In a similar fashion I also read the Hunger Games and Divergent. My favorite food is probably chili dogs. Honestly I just picked that one from a handful of foods that I like. My grandmother calls my food preferences “kiddie food” because I don’t really like the more adult meals such as pot roast (although I do like pot roast). I’ll pick a cheese burger over homemade chicken soup. The farthest I have traveled from home was to the Bahamas on vacation last summer. It was a fun trip but I could not quite get used to the time difference and stayed jet lagged for a majority of it. The difference is only three hours but I still could not wake up on time for breakfast, but I’d be up later than everyone else. Over spring break I just slept. I was mentally exhausted from all of the exams and essays and just let myself get some sleep. I did end up babysitting my nephew at some point during the break, so it was not as restful on those days, but I did my best to keep to myself.

    3. Delirium by Lauren Oliver and Maze Runner by James Dashner. Maze Runner is being made into a movie too! I think that guy from Teen Wolf is in it or something.

    4. I think that I am going to look into these books also. I was always fascinated with the idea of utopia's and dystopias. I never go to the movies but i heard the commercial for divergent on my pandora radio and thought it sounded really interesting so i'm happy to know it's actually a book.

    5. I agree that the quarter system can take some getting used to. It was overwhelming for me at first but now I actually prefer it over semesters because of the quick pace. I can totally relate to you "kiddie food" preferences. If my husband didn't cook I would most likely live off of Honey Nut Cheerios and Kool-Aid.

  20. Hello everyone,

My name is Abigail and I am a senior in my final quarter for my BA in Criminal Justice with a minor is Public Policy and Administration. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California and I come from a family of seven girls. I will never complain about it because the cost of living is phenomenal. I know people complain when they move here from other areas of the state or even other states. They say its boring, nothing to see, nothing to do, but every single person that moved away after high school ironically moves back after college to start all over here. Do not get me wrong; I absolutely love to travel and visit other towns especially all the wonderful pacific coast beaches that we are so blessed to be so close to. I think Bakersfield is perfect; we are smack dead in the middle of San Diego and San Francisco. Then again, Bakersfield is all I have ever known. Moving on, I was raised a pretty sheltered child without watching much television and only being physically active. Now as an adult TV can never hold my attention for much longer that 10 minutes. I am in love with music and enjoy genres such as Alternative County, Folk Rock, Alternative Metal, Reggae, Rock, Indie, Blues, Hip Hop, Country, Irish Pub Rock, and Latin. Some of my favorite artists are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Brandi Carlile, Norah Jones, Lana Del Rey, John Fruciante, Jason Aldean, Duffy, Enya, Incubus, System of a Down and my list can go on forever. I am athletic and love being outdoors. My hobbies are playing softball, visiting coffee shops, going wine tasting, paintballing, dancing, shooting, and camping. The furthest I have traveled was Salt Lake City, Utah for Softball Nationals when I was sixteen years old, for the record we won first place. I am currently a Juvenile Corrections Officer for the Kern County Probation Department and have been for one year. This profession has taken me from being sheltered to knowing more than I would have ever imagined possible. I have to say, it can desensitize you to many things within two weeks. I am currently on graveyard shifts, so if I post something at 3:45am do not judge me; I am not a crack head. Well I can ramble on forever, but I will be finished now. Hope I didn’t bore you.

    1. Hi,
Wow you come from a big family. Being a Juvenile Corrections Officer must not be an easy job you probably see and hear a lot. It is unfortunate that at such a young age they become criminals.
Hearing you makes me want to be more active. I think I will take advantage of the rec center and go work out. I live out in the vineyards and I am 21. My dad gets wine bottles from his work but the ones I tasted I didn't like. I wish I did like wine, because it seems fancy and I see the chefs drink it with their beautiful dishes on television. This summer I will be squeezing out the juice of the grapes to check their sugar levels. The company has grapes for chardonnay, zinfandel, merlot, pinot grigio, pinot noir and others.

    2. Hi Abigail! I have a big family too. I love it. The more the better :). I'm like you also, I was more physically active while growing up and I don't watch TV as often as I want to. Its just that I get bored watching. I'd rather be outside playing tennis or basketball or something to keep me active

      Delete
    3. Hi Abigail, I am not from Bakersfield, but I love that it is less crowded than other places. Also, I definitely agree with you with the cost of living in Bakersfield. I have a two bedroom apartment close to school for less than $900. In Orange County, a studio is all you can get with that amount. $900 2 bedroom in Bakersfield compared to a $1700 2 bedroom in OC- uhh yes, of course Bakersfield!

  21. Hello everyone,
My name is Ajaypal Dhillon, pronounced AJ-Paul, and I am also enrolled in English 305. I was born right here in Bakersfield. I am a junior at CSUB and I’m majoring in Biology with a pre-med focus. I had started as a Chemistry major, but after taking a few classes I realized chemistry isn’t my strongest subject. I’m considering taking a minor and have narrowed my choices to Anthropology or Religious Studies. I’m taking this course to satisfy the GWAR requirement and this is the first online course I’ve taken at CSUB. I decided to take this class online so that I’ll have more time to study for my organic chemistry class. I decided to stay in Bakersfield rather than going to another university, mainly to save some money (it’s a lot less expensive living with family). My favorite books are “1984” by George Orwell and “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens. I enjoy all types of foods but if I had to pick one in particular, it would be burgers. They're simple enough to make and can be prepared in so many ways. The farthest I traveled from home was to Punjab, India. My parents are originally from India and I have a lot of family there, so we go every two to three years to visit. In total, I have made seven trips and am currently planning my eighth, hopefully this summer. I enjoy playing video games and over winter break, I built myself a gaming PC from scratch. It’s actually a lot easier than it sounds and just requires a little research. The computer is primarily being used for schoolwork but having the extra power doesn’t hurt.

  22. Hi guys!! My name is Austin!! I was not named after the city in Texas. My mom just really liked the name for a girl. I am born and raised in this lovely town of Bakersfield. I am one of those weird few who actually likes this town. I have a twin brother and a 4-year-old sister. I have been a ballerina for 18 years. In addition, I get to spread my love of dance by teaching brand new dancers. I am a liberal studies major and pursuing my teaching credential. I am officially a senior, but I will not be completely done until Spring 2015. I have a huge heart for children and I cannot wait for the day that I am in the classroom getting the opportunity to teach so many sweet faces. Honestly, I am taking this class pretty much because I have to in order to satisfy the GWAR requirement. However, I really do enjoy reading and writing, so I am very excited for this class once I saw the syllabus. I really enjoy the number series by Janet Evanovich. They are such funny books, plus I love crime novels. I am a complete southern country girl, so I love any type of home cookin’. My grandma is originally from Oklahoma and can make some amazing dishes. Chicken and dumplings has to be one of my favorites. The farthest I have traveled from home was to Virginia, but I have also travelled to Oklahoma and Texas. Out of the country, I have only been to Mexico to build houses with my church. That is one of my most favorite things to do!! I am very involved with dance and with church. Country music is by far my favorite type of music. I am a Starbucks snob and it is the only coffee I drink. I have a major sweet tooth and will pretty much eat anything. Over Winter Break, I performed in The Nutcracker with the Bakersfield Symphony and just rested up after that. During Spring Break, I just chilled!! I love to learn and look forward to everything that this class will teach me!!

But something that I had wish my parents had done was sign me into a ballet class as a little girl. I also love country music. I started listening to it the summer of 2013. I don't really now the singers names but one I do know is Hunter Haynes. I love his songs and he is cute too.

Dancing in the Nutcracker must have been such a great experience! I'm also studying to be a teacher, I can't wait to have my own classroom.
I'm also pretty sure I singlehandedly keep my local Starbucks open. I love coffee far too much and all I need is for someone to invent a coffee IV. I'm looking forward to having you in class. Have a great quarter.

    3. Bunheads was a pretty decent show, but not really the reality of ballet…it was more of a childish version. Being a dancer all my life, you are kind of a harsh critic to anything dance related. Dancing in the Nutcracker is always a great experience. Plus I get to teach some of the dances, so it is a very rewarding experience as well!!

  23. My name is Emily, and I’m an English major from Bakersfield. I’m a senior, and only have two classes left to complete after this quarter and I will be graduating! Besides that, another exciting thing happened last summer. I got married to my best friend and boyfriend of six years! It’s been almost a year and I couldn’t be happier with married life. I was supposed to take English 300, but the only time it was offered was during the evening. I REALLY didn’t want to take an evening class every day since my new husband’s work schedule has him home in the evenings. The awesome secretary of the English department told me about this class as an online option, and I’m so happy to be here. My favorite books would probably be the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I really enjoy reading Christian couple devotionals with my husband as well as early American classics. I love steak, chocolate, champagne cake, and coffee. I love the idea of travelling, but sadly I haven’t been out of the country yet, or even to the East coast. The farthest I’ve been from home is to Carlsbad Caverns, eleven hours away in New Mexico. My husband and I recently went to the Grand Canyon and are planning a trip (hopefully soon) to Washington D.C. and the surrounding states. I’ve never been on a plane, and can’t wait to finally fly for the first time. For our first anniversary on June fifteenth, we made reservations at the first inn we stayed at on our honeymoon up Highway One. I’m very excited and ready to graduate in the Spring, and am planning to start substitute teaching in the Fall while I complete my last classes. I haven’t exactly decided what I would like to do for a career yet. I’m contemplating becoming a teacher like my mom, going into social work as my dad has recently done, or getting my master’s degree in counseling psychology and becoming a counselor or school psychologist. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone and wish everyone the best of luck this quarter!

  25. Hello everyone,
My name is Heather and I'm a senior majoring in sociology with a concentration in human services. I attend the Antelope Valley campus and the mandatory meeting for this class will be the first time that I will set foot on the main campus. I'm very excited to finally see it. I was born and raised in Lancaster however I have escaped a few time but I always seem to make my way back. Like so many other I know, coming back to your hometown makes you realize that it's not as bad as you previously thought it was. I am taking this class to satisfy the GWAR requirement as well as to polish my writing skills a bit before graduate school. My favorite book is "Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters" by Alan Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa. It's a quick and entertaining read about why we do the things we do from the point of view of evolutionary psychologists. I love Indian food and I enjoy making homemade versions of the things I have in restaurants. My husband and I took a road trip to Sequim, Washington 2 years ago to visit some of my family and to do all the tourist things along the way. It was an amazing trip and I am convinced that we will most likely call Oregon home one day because it was so beautiful. Over the break I spent a great deal of time reading in an attempt to get ahead for this quarter. I also watched an inordinate number of documentaries and anything else that looked halfway interesting but I had a very relaxing time doing it. I look forward to talking with you all throughout the quarter!

  26. Hi Everyone! My name is Leigh (pronounced Lee, btw) and I am a senior and an Economics major from Highland. I was born on an Army base in Oklahoma and moved to California at 6 weeks old. I recently transferred to Csub from Cal State San Bernardino. I am taking this class online because I still live in Highland which is about 3 hours away from Bakersfield, so driving 6 hours a day to and from school is just not feasible (have you seen the price of gas lately?) and moving is not an option at this time. This is my 3rd time enrolling in college to finish my undergraduate degree and gosh darn-it will be my last! My next stop will be to get an MBA in Finance. I’ve already begun prepping for the GMAT so wish me luck! I've experienced several setbacks in my life that have brought me to this point and I don't regret any of them. Each one served as a learning experience that helped to fashion me into the woman I am today. I just celebrated another year of life 2 weeks ago and despite the fact that I am getting older *sad face*, I am very grateful for my life and health. My favorite book is “The Prince of Tides” by Pat Conroy. It is my favorite because of how it so masterfully encapsulates heartache, pain and the family dynamic. Pat Conroy is such a magnificent storyteller. I love all types of food but especially Thai and Mexican. However if I had to choose my absolute favorite food (dish?) I would have pick ice scream. I could eat ice cream all day everyday, come hail, rain, sleet and snow or heat, drought and the like. I’m sad to say that the farthest I’ve ever traveled has been to Alabama (Roll Tide!) to visit my extended family. That is going to change however as I am currently planning a trip to Brazil next year for Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. I couldn’t be more excited! Over the break I mostly visited my family and friends. I also went to Vegas for sort of an impromptu B-Day celebration. I got to hang out with my adorable and absolutely brilliant 2-year-old niece. She is developing into such a beautiful young lady with a desire and an eagerness to learn that is so inspiring. I am really looking forward to this class and to this quarter and to finally being able to hold that Diploma in my hand and say ‘I did it!’

    Good luck to you all!

    -Leigh

    1. Hi Leigh,
Next year is a perfect time to go to Brasil! It wil be right in between the World Cup and the Olympics, so everything will be developed and beautiful...I hope! That is one great travel goal!

  27. Hello classmates of English 305,
My name is Chantel Rose, I am 22 years old and I am a first time student at CSUB. I received my Associates degree from Antelope Valley College last Spring and this is my first quarter back to school since then. Although I would love to completely exaggerate the truth and tell you that my break from school was due to traveling across the globe and experiencing all that the world has to offer, I would rather not start off this new blog experience with a lie. I have spent the whole last year working in the Antelope Valley Mall. Although I might have gained more admiration if I stuck with the story about traveling around the world, I am content and fulfilled exactly where I am in my life. If I feel the urge to take a trip somewhere in the world, I take the lazy, nerd route and read about that place and it’s culture and history. This might be because I am too broke to travel but I like to tell myself that it is because I am a passionate sociology student who can’t get enough studying. I guess this is the part where I tell you that I like long walks on the beach, which I do, and also about how I’m a vegetarian.
On my rare days off I will usually be at school but I can not be held accountable for being present in my on campus classes if one of my favorite bands is playing somewhere in California. To get to the real point here, I took this class because the convenience of it being an online course really helps me maximize my work availability and this course satisfies the GWAR requirement. I do plan on being a completely reliable student in this course, and I am excited to converse and hopefully learn a lot with you all.
    Splendid learning,
    Chantel Rose

    1. hi Chantel! I love to travel too! I have always thought of traveling different countries right after I get my degree in Nursing. I would love to do a European tour soon.

    2. Chantel I can totally relate to taking the nerd route when it comes to traveling. I am also a broke college student and get my travel fix through National geographic or the Travel Channel. I have a pretty lengthy list of countries I would like to visit. France is my number one destination. Hopefully I'll get there someday!

  28. Hello, I am Susie Villarreal. I have returned to school after a nine-year hiatus. I completed my Associates of Arts Degree in Psychology at Bakersfield College last June and am now in my junior year at CSUB. I hope to graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a minor in Social Gerontology next Spring. I have a gorgeous nine-year old daughter who keeps me motivated and grounded. I am taking this course not only as a GWAR fulfillment, but to also to help expand my writing skills. The online course is helping me to achieve my goals with a more manageable time schedule. Being a full-time parent, spouse, homemaker and student, as well as a part-time employee for a local law firm and volunteer for a few community organizations can be extremely challenging. This course will allow me to keep my sanity this quarter. Don’t be mistaken; I love every single role I have and I wouldn’t change the position I am in right now for anything in the world. Experiences make us all unique. My favorite role is being a mommy. One of my favorite pastimes is reading to my daughter (mostly non-fiction or biographies, but every once in a while we throw in a pre-teen type of book.) Although I stress the importance of experiencing diversity and challenge to my daughter, I have not really traveled further than my hometown Grafton, North Dakota. Someday I will change that, but for now, I hope to succeed in this course and keep my focus on my present goals with consideration of possible future adventures.

    1. We have several profs on campus who are from North Dakota. You folks should form a club!

    2. I just want to applaud you first for making the decision to come back to school and get your degree. Second I want to applaud for going to school and having a family and job as well, because that sounds like it would be quite difficult to juggle.

  29. Hello, my name is Cindy Palacios. This is currently my fourth year at CSUB. I am majoring in Political Science with a special minor in Agricultural Business. I am originally from Carson CA, but I moved to Taft CA about nine years ago. I decided to take an online course due to the work schedule I currently have. I work at Paramount Farms, which is a Pistachio and Almond company located in Lost Hills. The leading company in Pistachios, I may add. I don’t have a specific favorite book but I did enjoy reading The Hunger Games trilogy, and I enjoyed watching the movies even more. I was quite satisfied to see that the movie portrayed the events of the book quite closely. I also enjoyed reading The Godfather, which most people would recognize to be a mafia movie. By automotive, the furthest I have traveled from home was from California to Tennessee, on a family road trip. By plane, the furthest I have traveled is from Los Angeles CA to Managua, Nicaragua. My family is from Nicaragua, so typically every winter break we take a family trip to visit our relatives. This winter break, however, I did nothing but work long strenuous shifts, so I guess it wasn’t really a break. On my spare time I like to play musical instruments. I have a guitar, an accordion, and a keyboard. Someday I would like to own a grand piano in my living room. I am an outdoors kind of person. I like to go ride my quad in the fields behind my house. I also like to go hunting even though I miss half of the time. I hope to do well in this class, and I look forward to reading everyone’s blog posts.

  30. Hi everyone! My name is Brandi Woolsey and I am 21 years young. I am in my third year of education at CSUB, and I am majoring in liberal studies. My hopes are to become an elementary school teacher and teach third or fourth grade. I want to teach because I feel like it will not only be a fun job but a rewarding one as well. I want to teach at a title one or less wealthy school. I feel like children at schools such as those go through a lot more trials and have more difficulty learning in the classroom because of their various hardships at home. I want to help children such as those, and make a real impact on their lives in a positive way. I was born in Delano and lived there shortly because that is where my parents were raised, and later moved to Bakersfield. I believe the furthest I've traveled is Wyoming from California. During my winter break I just stayed in Bakersfield the whole and worked a lot. I work quite often whenever I am not at school. I feel like I am never fully caught up on sleep. I am taking this course like many others of you to satisfy the GWAR before I graduate. In my spare time I like to listen to music and look up new music. My favorite genres of music are mostly hip hop, rap, and r&b. I mostly enjoy listening to throwback music from the 90's. I also enjoy eating food! I am a big foodie and I love trying new dishes! My favorite type of food would have to be Mexican. I love spicy foods! I cant wait to graduate and get started on my future career as a teacher. This is my motivation to persevere to reach my goal.

    1. Brandi if you love 90's music you have to check out the 90's alternative hits station on Pandora. It's my go-to road trip station and they never play a bad song! Obviously I love 90's music too, also 80's. Being a teacher is hard work but we need great people like you to lead our children! So thank you for choosing that profession and best of luck to you with your studies

    2. Hi Brandi, did you want to teach locally in Bakersfield, or do you have plans of moving somewhere else?

  31. Hi my name is Kristen Woods. I am 21 years old and in my fourth year at CSUB. I am currently in my second year of the nursing program and will be graduating next June. I am very excited to work in a local hospital and give excellent patient care. I am not quite sure which field I want to go into yet, but I really enjoyed shadowing a nurse in the operating room and emergency department. I am currently in my labor and delivery rotation and love it. I was born and raised in Bakersfield and attended North High School (go stars!). Baseball season is my favorite time of year and lucky for me it goes on for quite awhile. I am a diehard Dodgers fan and can't wait to catch some games this year. An interesting fact about me is that I can't smell. In 2010, I got into a horseback riding accident and fractured my skull. I also damaged my olfactory nerve, which is responsible for taste and smell. It comes in handy when I am in some sticky situations at the hospital or taking out the trash. But I do miss certain smells in particular, especially the smell of a Christmas tree. I hope to participate in stem cell research and pioneer new ways to regenerate damaged nerves. In my spare time I like to curl up on the couch with a big cup of coffee and watch Criminal Minds marathons. I'm very excited to be taking an online class because I am usually up very early for my nursing classes. It's a nice change of pace to be able to do my work from home!

    1. Hi Kristen, first of all let me congratulate you on your team preference (think blue). So you said you damaged your olfactory nerve in an accident and can no longer smell. If there is an odor strong enough, say a chemical fume (since you have shadowed in the ER) could you vaguely smell it?
